The story of the fly and how it could save the world will take you behind the pesky reputation and inside the brain and body of the much misunderstood fly.
It investigates the insect as a pest and how man has tried tirelessly, often unsuccessfully) to kill it – exploring everything from how it walks on ceilings to how it survives Ice Ages and outsmarts all manner of fly swats, toxins and traps. The book also reveals how, throughout history, innovative humans – including Genghis Kahn, Napoleon Bonaparte’s surgeon, NASA, various forensic entomologists and the UK’s National Health Service – have harnessed and researched the fly to help mankind.
But ultimately it introduces the fly as a future hero that could help save the world.
How? By recycling waste nutrients and generating sustainable protein to spare the fish in the ocean and feed the ever-growing number of people on our Earth. That’s a story worth telling. And one worth reading, too.

The title of this book (173 pages, hard copy) by Jason Drew and Justine Joseph brings a smile to the face as one might be tempted to think that the reader should expect some funny story from which one can read parts from to your friends at a barbeque so that everyone can have a laugh. Well, surprise, surprise. Even though you will be smiling many times due to the funny way some facts are presented on many occasions throughout the book, the subject matter is all but funny.
It deals with a new look on the fly - that omnipresent but irritating little insect. Having read the book, you will, first of all understand the abilities and capabilities of a fly and marvel at what it is capable of. You will understand why scientists are constantly doing research on this little animal and how different sectors of industry are trying to emulate different abilities of the fly, in particular its miraculous way of flying, landing and walking on vertical surfaces and even upside-down on the ceilings of our homes.
Apart from this, a few topics stand out The fly's contribution to solving certain medical conditions (Chapter 5), its contribution to solving crimes (Chapter 8) and, finally, its contribution to solving the protein crisis we are facing (Chapter 10).
Maggots are the larvae of flies and it is a well-established fact that they feed only on dead tissues. For this reason they are used to clean up non-healing diabetic leg and foot ulcers. Not only do they clean up wounds, they also contribute towards the healing of those wounds. The reason for this is the fact that it has been established that they secrete a substance called "allantoin," which actively stimulates healing and sell proliferation. The history of maggots being used in this way, is also described.
How can flies help to solve crimes?? Well, different flies arrive at a dead body at different times and by analysing the different maggots and the stages of development of the different maggots, forensic pathologists can make some pretty precise scientifically based inferences concerning the time of death.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed every chapter of the book, the chapter on the fly's contribution towards the protein crisis of the world really captivated my attention. There is simply not enough protein to feed our over-populated planet. Red meat is supplemented by chicken and fish - which are fed with fish meal (and soya meal). Many fish populations are already depleted and on the verge of total collapse.
The answer to this problem is the larvae of the fly (maggots). They contain as much as 55% complete proteins and can replace fish meal and soya meal completely. Doing that, they will also solve the massive problem of garbage and in particular meat based garbage. This topic is discussed at length in Chapter 10. We learn how a South African based company is already doing this and how it is on the verge of scaling up on a massive basis.
Every day we are bombarded by bad news. This book brings some good news. Really good news. You simply have to read it!
Excellent. How to turn the common housefly into a extremely useful insect.
The book taught me a lot about an insect that I run into most days and I was surprised to learn of the amount of research being carried out on the fly's structure and ability to fly and manouvre. The fact that we could use flies to generate protein to feed animals that feed us was also illuminating.
